Residents from across the Cefn area were all smiles this morning as the Community Agents’ Over 50s Trip to Southport set off without a hitch — a testament to the tireless work of Cefn Community Agent Donna Thornley.

The much-anticipated trip, organised and coordinated by Donna, brought together dozens of local residents for a fun-filled day by the seaside, complete with sunshine, sea air, shopping, and of course, plenty of ice cream.

Donna Thornley has gone above and beyond to tackle isolation in the community and bring the over-50s together in meaningful ways. “It’s been fantastic to see everyone so excited,” she said. “There was fun, laughter, and joy all around — with some people connecting for the very first time. These trips are about creating memories, building friendships, and showing everyone that they matter.”

Supported by Cefn Community Council, this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote wellbeing and social connection for older residents across Cefn Mawr, Acrefair, Newbridge, Plas Madoc, and surrounding areas.

Councillor Phil Vaughan, Chairman of Cefn Community Council, praised Donna’s dedication:
“Donna’s commitment to our community is truly inspiring. She works tirelessly to make sure our older residents feel included, valued, and supported. This trip is a perfect example of how community spirit comes alive when we come together.”

Local resident Barbara Lloyd, who was among those enjoying the trip, said:
“In my opinion, Cefn Community Council is one of the best in the country. They’re forward-thinking and genuinely caring — always finding ways to bring people together and improve lives. Days like today, filled with laughter and connection, really lift your spirits.”

As the coach made its way to Southport under bright blue skies, it was clear that Cefn Community Council’s commitment to building a connected, caring, and vibrant community is stronger than ever.
