Residents from across the Cefn area were all smiles this morning as the Community Agents’ Over 50s Trip to Southport set off without a hitch — a testament to the tireless work of Cefn Community Agent Donna Thornley.
The much-anticipated trip, organised and coordinated by Donna, brought together dozens of local residents for a fun-filled day by the seaside, complete with sunshine, sea air, shopping, and of course, plenty of ice cream.
Donna Thornley has gone above and beyond to tackle isolation in the community and bring the over-50s together in meaningful ways. “It’s been fantastic to see everyone so excited,” she said. “There was fun, laughter, and joy all around — with some people connecting for the very first time. These trips are about creating memories, building friendships, and showing everyone that they matter.”
Supported by Cefn Community Council, this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote wellbeing and social connection for older residents across Cefn Mawr, Acrefair, Newbridge, Plas Madoc, and surrounding areas.
Councillor Phil Vaughan, Chairman of Cefn Community Council, praised Donna’s dedication: “Donna’s commitment to our community is truly inspiring. She works tirelessly to make sure our older residents feel included, valued, and supported. This trip is a perfect example of how community spirit comes alive when we come together.”
Local resident Barbara Lloyd, who was among those enjoying the trip, said: “In my opinion, Cefn Community Council is one of the best in the country. They’re forward-thinking and genuinely caring — always finding ways to bring people together and improve lives. Days like today, filled with laughter and connection, really lift your spirits.”
As the coach made its way to Southport under bright blue skies, it was clear that Cefn Community Council’s commitment to building a connected, caring, and vibrant community is stronger than ever.

On a momentous day for Welsh and Wrexham sporting history, Cefn Community Council, in proud partnership with North Wales Police and thanks to PACT funding, hosted the first-ever All Girls Schools Futsal Competition at Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, right here in the heart of the Cefn District.
The #StayOnSide initiative, designed to inspire, empower, and engage young people through sport, marked a significant milestone as girls from local schools came together to compete, support each other, and showcase the incredible talent that exists in our community. The event was not only a sporting success but a powerful statement about inclusivity, opportunity, and positive youth engagement.
A huge congratulations goes to Ysgol Acrefair, who made history as the first winners of this groundbreaking tournament. Their teamwork, passion, and sportsmanship were second to none.
Chairman of Cefn Community Council, Mr. Phil Vaughan, proudly presented the winning trophy and shared his heartfelt thoughts on the day:
“It was an absolute honour to present the trophy and witness history being made in our community. This competition isn’t just about sport—it’s about giving our young girls the chance to shine, to grow in confidence, and to feel part of something bigger. I’m immensely proud of everyone who took part and all those who made it happen.”
Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe, expressed his pride in seeing the vision come to life:
“This has been a dream in the making—to create a safe, inspiring space for girls to play, learn, and grow through futsal. Today was about more than a competition; it was about empowerment, teamwork, and rewriting what’s possible for young people in Wrexham. I’m incredibly proud of every school that took part and grateful to all the partners who believed in the vision especially PCSO Lara Shiers who was an incredible driving force behind the project.”
Special thanks go to all participating schools, dedicated staff, volunteers, and especially to the young players who gave their all on the court. The event has set the stage for future opportunities, with hopes of making the Girls’ Futsal Tournament an annual highlight in the Cefn District calendar.
Together, we’ve not only made history—we’ve built a platform for the future.
At 6:30 AM on Monday morning, our Chairman, Mr. Phil Vaughan, was out in the heart of Cefn Mawr ensuring the community was ready to mark VE Day with pride. He personally installed the VE Day signage and flags at the Cenotaph, setting the tone for a respectful and meaningful commemoration.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Vaughan for his continued dedication and commitment to our community.
